Discover Newberry
Newberry's emergence was closely tied to phosphate, a mineral valued for its role in fertilizer production. The city's historic-resources survey places a local discovery in 1889 and describes the investment in land, mines and processing facilities that followed. This was not simply a farming settlement that happened to have a railway: its early growth depended on extracting and transporting a material used by agriculture elsewhere.
More about Newberry
In 1893, the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway connected High Springs and Archer through the area. The survey describes the Newberry site at that stage as relatively undeveloped. Rail construction and mineral investment therefore help explain why a town formed at this particular place.
The county history records an early name, Newton, followed by Newberry and incorporation in 1895. It also notes a later tung-oil industry in the 1930s. Together, these accounts show an economy that changed rather than remaining fixed in its phosphate-boom period. The municipal survey is a useful resource for readers who want to connect those changes to surviving buildings and the development of the town.
