Discover Hawthorne
Hawthorne grew from a settlement remembered in the county history as Morrison's Mills. The railroad arrived in 1879, supporting a period of citrus production and tourism. Severe freezes in the 1890s damaged that economy, although agriculture remained important. Those shifts connect the town to the wider story of inland Florida communities shaped by farming and rail access.
More about Hawthorne
The Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail offers a different way to encounter that transport history. Much of the route follows an abandoned railway bed, turning a former working corridor into a place for outdoor travel. Florida State Parks identifies surviving concrete mileage and whistle markers along the trail as reminders of the trains that once used it. They are small details, but they give the landscape a history beyond its present recreational purpose.
The trail is a regional route, not a claim that every section lies within Hawthorne. Its official map and notices are the appropriate resources for choosing an access point and checking conditions. The town's agricultural background and the reused rail corridor together explain more than a simple location description.
