Discover High Springs
High Springs developed around the meeting of railroad investment and the phosphate industry. The Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad extended through the area in 1884, establishing a station and post office. Mining helped stimulate growth, and incorporation followed in 1892. A rail connection toward Port Tampa, completed the next year, strengthened the town's role in moving people and goods across Florida.
More about High Springs
The springs and rivers tell a much older story. The municipal history notes prehistoric remains and early tools recovered from nearby waterways, placing the railroad town within a landscape used long before its streets were laid out. The Santa Fe River and surrounding natural areas later became important settings for outdoor recreation.
Downtown shops and cultural venues give the community another layer beyond its transport history. The city's account describes an antiques revival during the 1980s and 1990s. Read the downtown and river landscape together rather than assuming every spring attraction is inside the city. Historical sources disagree about early name-change dates, so no exact renaming chronology is asserted here.
