Discover Trenton
Trenton grew as a market and transport point for an agricultural district, with timber-related products, cotton and watermelons among the exports described in its municipal history. The post office adopted the Trenton name in 1883, and the state granted the community a charter in 1908.
More about Trenton
Its later civic importance was linked to a dispute over access. Residents in western Alachua County wanted a better road to the county seat at Gainesville. The movement for a new county ultimately produced Gilchrist County, and Trenton won the election to become its seat in 1926. Local government geography therefore reflects a practical concern about travel, not merely a line drawn on a map.
Rail corridors that once moved commodities now provide a different form of connection. The Nature Coast State Trail follows abandoned railway alignments meeting at Wilcox Junction and links Trenton with other communities in the region. Agricultural history, the county-seat campaign and rail reuse provide complementary ways to understand the town's role.
