Discover Mc Intosh
McIntosh's small scale preserves traces of a community once supported by farming and railroad travel. The town incorporated in 1913, but its agricultural story reaches further back. Citrus groves and vegetable production helped sustain the local economy, while visitors arriving by train came to hunt and fish around Orange Lake. Repeated freezes weakened commercial citrus growing, and land increasingly shifted toward cattle and horses. The town's history dates its last train to 1974.
More about Mc Intosh
Changes in transportation also changed the business district. Commercial activity moved away from the depot area toward the highway as roads became more important. That shift helps explain why the old railroad setting and roadside businesses tell different parts of the same story. The McIntosh Historic District received National Register recognition in 1983. Its streets and surviving buildings offer a starting point for understanding the town without treating every old structure as a public attraction. Local historical organizations linked by the town provide further context. The city catalog spells the name Mc Intosh; the municipality uses McIntosh.
