Discover Waldo
Waldo's transportation history reaches back to the settlement known as Bellamy Station. The Florida Railroad arrived in 1859, and the name Waldo honored Dr. Benjamin Waldo of Ocala. That connection helped position the town within a growing network of trade and travel.
More about Waldo
The municipal history describes a community actively promoted to northern visitors as a winter destination. Advertising and guidebooks highlighted opportunities for hunting and fishing, while an opera house and well-attended baseball games added social life beyond the surrounding countryside. These details reveal a place that sold leisure and community activity as well as agricultural products.
Citrus was one of the crops shipped to northern markets before the destructive freezes of the 1890s. The relationship between those groves and the railroad is a useful way to understand Waldo: transport made outside markets and visitors reachable, but it could not protect crops from severe weather. The city's historical account provides a starting point for exploring that earlier town, rather than reducing its identity to the highways that now pass through the area.
