Discover Williston
Williston's municipal history connects its beginnings with the Willis family, and a state archival account records legislative incorporation in 1897. Farming formed an important part of the surrounding community, before wartime demands transformed land outside the town.
More about Williston
A local history of the airport, preserved in the University of Florida's digital collections, describes federal acquisition of farmland in 1942 for military use. The account names farming families, including the Robinsons and Fugates, whose holdings were affected. Read as a local recollection, it provides a human dimension to the airfield's origins: military infrastructure replaced land that families had already developed for agriculture.
Preservation also has an explicit place in city planning. Williston assigns its planning and zoning commission a historical and beautification role. The agricultural background, airfield development and continuing attention to town character are connected parts of the story. They offer more context than treating Williston only as a route between larger destinations or a gateway to nearby recreation.
