Discover Starke
Starke's railroad location helped establish it as a service and trading center for the surrounding farms. The city describes itself as a midpoint on the Fernandina-to-Cedar Key railway, with citrus and strawberry production contributing to growth during the late nineteenth century. That agricultural connection remains an important part of its history beyond the traffic passing through the region.
More about Starke
Later transport and military development brought new pressures and opportunities. U.S. 301 and nearby Camp Blanding strengthened Starke's role as a regional center. Its historic downtown includes a movie theatre dating to the 1940s, a reminder that the community developed social and commercial institutions as well as shipping connections.
The Camp Blanding Museum, established in 1990, interprets the training center's history and World War II involvement. It is a separate destination near Starke, not a downtown attraction. Considering the railroad, agricultural hinterland and military connection together gives a fuller account of why the city became important to this part of north-central Florida.
