Discover Cross City
Cross City became the seat of a newly organized county through a local vote. Florida Memory's transcription of the 1930s historical survey records that Dixie County was created in 1921 and that Cross City was selected over Eugene and Old Town as the county seat. The first county meetings and temporary court arrangements followed soon afterward.
More about Cross City
The same archival account places the community along a road and Atlantic Coast Line railway corridor. That transportation connection helped give Cross City a central civic role in a largely rural county. The town's current municipal information provides the present-day perspective; the archival record should be read as a snapshot of county formation, not as a description of modern services or business conditions.
Cross City's identity is closely connected to the institutions that serve Dixie County, including the courthouse and local government. Its story is a reminder that county seats often emerged through practical choices about travel and administration, not simply through population size. The county's rivers, forests and coast remain part of the surrounding region, each with separate access and stewardship.
