Discover Interlachen
Interlachen grew as a railroad-era citrus and winter-resort community. Hotels and lake recreation were central to that early identity, before destructive freezes undermined commercial orange growing. The town's municipal history also describes fires that removed two of its three major nineteenth-century hotels, changing the built landscape as well as the economy.
More about Interlachen
Several surviving places help explain what came before. Hastings Park was formerly Hotel Park, a recreation ground associated with the Hotel Interlachen and extending toward Lake Chipco. The replacement town hall, built in 1892 after the original burned, combined municipal offices, a jail and a social hall; it later accommodated the library.
Education adds another visible thread. The school district identifies the Sid Martin Building as the original Interlachen Academy, built in 1895. The town incorporated in 1888. Reading these civic and school buildings alongside its former resort spaces reveals a community that adapted after the citrus boom, rather than one whose history ended when the groves declined.
