Discover Sumatra
Sumatra is a small Liberty County community whose history is recorded in both local accounts and state archives. A Florida Historical Records Survey entry documents a Methodist Episcopal congregation established there in 1906, a concrete marker of community life in the early twentieth century. The record is about the congregation, not a complete census of the settlement, but it helps place Sumatra within the network of rural institutions that served dispersed households.
More about Sumatra
A transcribed Works Progress Administration history says the community was founded in 1907 and discusses the origin of its name. Because that is a retrospective county history, its account is best treated as a lead for further archival research rather than as a final word on every detail. Liberty County's broader story includes timber, river travel and small settlements separated by extensive rural land.
Sumatra's page can bring these scattered records together while keeping their evidence types clear. Current services and access information should come from county sources, not from historical descriptions.
