Discover Hosford
Hosford's name carries a small but telling piece of Liberty County history. Florida Natural Areas Inventory records that the settlement was first called Coe's Mill and became Hosford in 1907, after Senator Hosford helped bring the railroad through the area. That account connects the community's growth to transportation without suggesting that rail service remains a current feature.
More about Hosford
A landmark from a later era is the Hosford School and Gymnasium. The Florida Department of State says the Works Progress Administration built the complex in 1936 using locally sourced pine. It served as more than a school: the state account describes its role in community life and documents the history of segregated education and the transition toward integration in the 1960s.
Hosford briefly had a municipal charter adopted in 1913 and abolished in 1915, according to the Florida Senate's legislative index. The date matters: the historical charter should not be mistaken for current incorporation. Together, the railroad story and school complex give this rural community a grounded local history, while county and state sources remain the best guides to present-day services, access and conditions.
