Discover Yankeetown
Yankeetown began in 1923 with Armanis F. Knotts, an Indiana lawyer and politician who developed a settlement along the lower Withlacoochee River. Fishing and outdoor recreation were part of the attraction he promoted to people from his home state.
More about Yankeetown
The Izaak Walton Lodge formed an important part of that idea. Built as accommodation for anglers, it took its name from the English author of The Compleat Angler. The town's historical account connects the lodge with Knotts' land downriver from Inglis, while the state's wildlife agency dates the historic lodge to 1927. These details link the settlement's physical development with a particular style of fishing tourism.
The nearby Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve provides a different perspective on the coastal landscape. Along with the riverfront, it offers a starting point for learning about the public conservation lands surrounding the community. Treat it as a separate destination and check its current access information. The area's appeal is not just its name, but the relationship between river settlement, angling and protected coastal habitat.
