Discover San Mateo
San Mateo grew along the St. Johns River south of Palatka. An 1880s Putnam County history describes a settlement established in 1867 and records churches, a school and citrus groves as features of the community at that time. This period snapshot offers a sense of San Mateo's early civic and agricultural life, but its population and institutions should not be treated as current facts.
More about San Mateo
Road building later strengthened the connection with Palatka. The Florida Department of Transportation's historic-bridge report describes the Old San Mateo Road Bridge as part of a brick-road project linking the small community with the county seat. Florida Memory also preserves an archival record for a Presbyterian church established in 1882. Together, these sources show how river access, roads and local institutions shaped a place that was connected to, but distinct from, Palatka.
San Mateo's history is best read through both its river setting and the infrastructure that tied it to the county. Check current access and services with local authorities.
