Discover Crystal River
Crystal River's history includes manufacturing and shipping as well as the springs and wildlife associated with it today. In 1882, a cedar mill began operating on Kings Bay, producing boards for pencils that were shipped to New Jersey. The arrival of the railroad in 1888 created another route for goods and visitors, while phosphate added to the area's industrial economy. The city incorporated in 1923.
More about Crystal River
A much older history survives at Crystal River Archaeological State Park. Established as a state park in 1962 to protect Native American mounds, the site records community and ceremonial life long before modern industry or incorporation. Its museum uses exhibits and a film to explain the archaeology and the site's investigation.
These are different historical scales, not one continuous story beginning with the modern town. The bay's cedar mills and rail connection explain nineteenth-century commerce; the protected mounds reveal a deeper Indigenous landscape. Learning about both provides a fuller picture of Crystal River than a description focused entirely on present-day recreation.
