Discover Titusville
Titusville's story links river transport, aviation and spaceflight, but its community history predates the rocket industry. A post office served the settlement of Sand Point in 1859. Henry Titus arrived in 1867, and he and Mary Titus developed a hotel and donated land for civic and religious buildings. Connections between the St. Johns River and Indian River depended on overland movement as well as water travel.
More about Titusville
An aviation landmark followed in 1927, when the field now known as Arthur Dunn Airpark opened for emergency use by airmail aircraft. Later, Kennedy Space Center brought a different scale of technical employment and housing demand. The city's history records how space-program expansion and subsequent changes reshaped the community, rather than presenting its growth as a single uninterrupted boom.
Space View Park brings that later story into the downtown landscape. Its monuments recognize both astronauts and the people working behind the scenes; Mercury astronaut handprints and mission emblems make the subject tangible. The park also has a less obvious environmental function. Its detention pond captures runoff from surrounding commercial property, while treatment helps reduce pollutants entering the Indian River Lagoon. It is therefore both a place of commemoration and a piece of the city's water-management infrastructure.
