Discover Cocoa
Cocoa's village center grew from an Indian River settlement rather than from the later development of the Atlantic beach communities. The city's history places the arrival of early families around 1860 and records a plat made in 1882 under the name Indian River City. Cocoa became the established local name by 1884, although the city preserves several competing accounts of how it was chosen. None needs to be treated as a proven single origin.
More about Cocoa
The developing business district suffered a major fire in 1890. Rail expansion in the early 1890s then changed the settlement's access to supplies and markets, adding another transport connection to its river setting. Cocoa incorporated in 1895. Together, these milestones explain why surviving downtown buildings belong to a community that had already experienced both rebuilding and economic change.
Historic Cocoa Village contains several different kinds of cultural resource. The Cocoa Village Playhouse represents performance and community entertainment; the Florida Historical Society provides a connection to documentary history. Porcher House and Derby Street Chapel add domestic and religious architecture to that picture. Their presence gives the village a broader role than a shopping district alone.
The municipal history and cultural directory are useful starting points for exploring the mainland city's own identity, separate from similarly named Cocoa Beach.
