Discover Jennings
Jennings lies in the northern part of Hamilton County, distinct from the county's other communities at Jasper and White Springs. One particularly well-documented piece of its history is the former Jennings High School on Florida Street.
More about Jennings
The National Register nomination records a brick school building constructed in 1927 and opened in January 1928. Its Mission Revival frontage gave a public institution a distinctive architectural presence. Extensions to the wings in 1933 created room for high-school students, while the auditorium hosted assemblies, music, plays and graduations. The building represented both educational investment and a place for organized community gatherings.
That investment was unequal. The nomination explains that the school initially served white children within a segregated county system, while Black students faced more restricted resources. Recognizing that context avoids turning a handsome schoolhouse into an incomplete celebration. Its architecture and documented school life provide a specific way to learn about Jennings without assuming the building's historic functions describe its current use or guarantee public access.
