Discover Greenville
Greenville has an important place in the childhood of Ray Charles, but it should not be confused with his birthplace. He was born in Albany, Georgia, in 1930 before his family moved to this part of Florida. The distinction makes the town's connection more precise: Greenville belongs to the story of his early life rather than to a claim that he was born here.
More about Greenville
In 1937, Charles entered the school for deaf and blind students in St. Augustine. The state's arts biography describes his education in Braille and several instruments there, followed by performances in Florida cities as he began working professionally. Those later places form a regional journey, with Greenville as an early point in it.
The town preserves his childhood home and directs visitors to arrange access through municipal contacts. Do not assume it operates with the hours of a large staffed museum. The home gives this small community a specific cultural landmark, connecting a local childhood setting with an artist whose influence reached far beyond Florida.
