Discover Green Cove Springs
Green Cove Springs takes its identity from a natural spring and a sheltered bend of the St. Johns River. The spring supplies water to the municipal pool before its outflow continues through Spring Run to the river. That visible route is a useful way to understand why water became central to the town's development.
More about Green Cove Springs
An early nineteenth-century Spanish land grant supported a live-oak sawmill in the area. The settlement took the Green Cove Springs name in 1866, became Clay County's seat in 1871 and incorporated in 1874. Hotels subsequently attracted winter visitors arriving through the river corridor. Claims about curative spring water were part of that historical marketing, not medical facts established here.
Spring Park preserves the relationship between the spring, public recreation and the riverfront. Its water features can be read alongside the older commercial history: timber first made the landscape economically valuable to settlers, while the spring and winter climate later helped turn it into a resort destination.
