Discover Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor's older municipal records may appear under a different name. The town incorporated as Eden in 1796 and adopted the name Bar Harbor in 1918. That change matters for anyone researching local families, property or civic history: a search limited to the modern name can miss an earlier part of the record. The town occupies the northeastern part of Mount Desert Island, with a history that includes maritime work as well as the visitor economy.
More about Bar Harbor
The Abbe Museum provides an essential perspective beyond the town's municipal timeline. Its focus is Wabanaki history and culture, a subject that cannot be reduced to the later development of a resort community. Founded in 1926, the museum opened its original site at Sieur de Monts Spring in 1928. Its downtown location came much later, after the organization acquired the former YMCA building in 1997. The downtown museum opened on September 29, 2001. The two locations therefore represent different stages of the institution's history.
For family and community research, the town's genealogy resource points readers toward local records and institutions including Jesup Memorial Library and the historical society. These offer a route into the lives behind the familiar destination name.
Reading the Eden records alongside the museum's history gives the place a broader chronology, distinguishing municipal naming, Indigenous heritage and the development of institutions that preserve local knowledge.
