Discover Caryville
Caryville began as a river-and-rail community. Washington County's historical society says the place was first called Half Moon Bluff and developed around a sawmill and the arrival of the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad in the early 1880s. The Choctawhatchee River provided another route for moving materials, tying the town's early growth to both water and rail transportation.
More about Caryville
The same local timeline notes that Caryville received electric power in 1903, a marker of its early civic development. Timber and naval stores shaped the wider county economy, although those historical industries should not be mistaken for Caryville's current employment profile.
Caryville remains a small incorporated town in Washington County. The river and surrounding rural landscape are part of its setting, but access to particular banks, roads and recreation areas is controlled by their owners or managers. County sources provide a grounded way to understand the town's history and current public notices.
